Kids In Distress Event

"Let's Be Vets", our annual community service event, was a big success. Members Dr. Meg Formoso of Camelot Animal Hospital in Davie and Dr. Janet Simowitz coordinated the event held Saturday, May 10, at Kids in Distress in Wilton Manors. "We were invited to come the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend to distract the kids from an otherwise difficult time. After hearing that, we grabbed the date." As part of the event each of the twenty sheltered children in attendance received a new stuffed animal, compliments of BCVMA. The children, aged three to twelve, then rotated between several stations where they identified and vaccinated their new "pets", performed suturing or bandaging, and reviewed Xrays and other diagnostics. BCVMA also brought two computer stations equipped with interactive veterinary software for the older kids to experience, and animal art materials for the younge r kids.
A big thanks to member Dr. Arch Gordon of Coral Ridge Animal Hospital in Fort Lauderdale for attending and bringing five veterinary staff members to help; also to Ms. Cristina Polit of Balasky Animal Hospital in Davie, for attending and bringing the snacks. And, we couldn't have done it without the student power of Stranahan High School's National Honor Society and Medical Magnet program students, under the leadership of Magnet coordinator Maria Hanrahan. With so many volunteers we were able to give all of our "veterinarians" the one-on-one attention that they so desperately need.
